Every good unit ends with a paper (says every English teacher in the world!). And for The Scarlet Letter, I couldn’t agree more!
I wanted my students to synthesize what they’d learned about the novel, the characters, the themes, and the reasons why we read in a short paper.
I created an assignment sheet to guide their writing. I was slightly more flexible this time around. My goal was to see what the students learned–I accepted first person, narrative/personal writing–however, I wanted three pages of analysis and textual evidence.
Here’s the assignment sheet: The Scarlet Letter Final Paper.
