There’s a lot going on in the first few chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird. To help my students with their comprehension and understanding, I had them use a study guide to help with note-taking.
The study guide focused on a few things:
- Setting/description of town
- Characters we were introduced to right away [Atticus, Jem, Scout, Calpurnia, Boo Radley, Miss Rachel Haverford, Miss Stephanie Crawford]
- Meeting Dill
- Boo Radley: Who? What? Where?
- Death at the Radley House
- The Dare
These, I felt, were the most important points of the first few chapters. I had my students take notes on these in a study guide. I also gave them a sheet of elements I wanted them to understand going into reading [on the right].
This is a note sheet I took from my cooperating teacher; it is not mine. However, I love it and thought having students look up these elements and put the definitions in their own words could only help them as they read!
