Pre-Reading Image Strategy

For this specific pre-reading strategy, the teacher selects an image that represents some themes/central concepts of the story.

prereadingWithout giving the students the title of the picture, the teacher has students predict what the story could be about based on the picture. This helps the students to analyze the picture—the colors, the mood, the images, the composition. The teacher also uses a worksheet that asks students questions like ‘What do you know about the story based on the title?’ and ‘This is what I think I know because of the pictures,’ etc. As a pre-reading strategy, this allows students to predict and think about the story before even reading it. It helps to move their minds in the right direction, especially because after reading, they will go back to the picture and rethink their previous predictions and observations.
