Poetry Connections

Making text-to-self connections can be pretty simple when you’re working with a story, explanatory text, or short passage. Poetry, on the other hand, can be a challenge. That’s why I wanted to specifically work on this with my Book Club students.

I’ve subscribed to ReadWorks this past year–it’s an amazing resource for reading passages, questions, and vocabulary. I came across a poem by Lauren Pierce, simply called “Butterfly.”

The poem was very simple and easy to understand, so I created a set of text-to-self questions to go along with it and help my struggling readers to make connections!

This is what the resource looked like, and I shared it through Google Classroom so my kids could simply type their answers.

It started as independent activity, but then we discussed it as a group.

A few days later, we went back to this poem and made text-to-world connections, too!

This is a simple activity to meet students where they are, and work with their slower reading development. I feel that I’ve really started learning how to accommodate and create resources for a wide variety of students.!
