School Yearbook

For this strategy, students are encouraged to write as if writing for the yearbook.

They will be given pictures pertaining either to contemporary topics, topics within the school setting, or topics from their actual classroom content. The students will be instructed to write captions, descriptive passages, and reflections to these pictures. It will encourage all types of narrative writing, but even persuasive writing, and more—the teacher can alter the assignments based on what the teacher wants to integrate into the curriculum.

I think that this is a great strategy because it helps students to enjoy writing. They can feel that they are writing for a purpose, but also for fun. I like that students get involved in writing that is first-person/reflection-like as well as academic. Too often in life students will be writing essays—this writing will be academic without being dry.
