To Kill a Mockingbird can be a challenging text, just due to the fact that there are so many characters! I wanted to help my students organize and keep the characters straight, so I created a character map.
I had students fill in this map for the first two chapters. Any major characters would go in the boxes; secondary or additional characters would go in the ‘Additional’ section or on the back with a short description and picture if applicable.
As the students continued in their reading, we added to the map. We even added pages!
I loved having the character maps because as we read, I had the students add the character in class or for homework. It was super easy for them to organize, plus they described the characters and added pictures, which deepened their understanding. As they continue, we’ll keep adding!
